The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Military Specification MIL-D-37079.
This Commercial Item Description covers an ion exchange water demineralize used for producing Up to 5 gallons (18.93 liters) an hour of demineralized water by gravity flow. Shall be Crystalab Inc. Model CL-5 or equal, having the following salient characteristics.
Salient characteristics:
The water demineralize shall be a table model for use in a laboratory and shall consist of the following:
1. A shatterproof and transparent plastic tower.
2. A base housing.
3. A direct reading quality check [salinity indicating) meter.
4. Outlet tubing with shut-off clamp.
5. Power cord.
The base shall support the tower, and shall house the quality check meter and electrical circuitry. The assembled water demineralize shall have an overall height of 17-3/4 inches (45.09 cm.) nominal and a maximum weight of five (5) pounds (2.25 kg.). The water demineralize shall be free of wobble and rocking when placed on a flat level surface.
Tower. The tower (cylinder) shall have a minimum capacity of 1 gallon (3.79 liters). The inside of the tower shall have a shelf opening to accommodate an inserted ion-exchange resin, cartridge (Crystalab Model FC-10 or equal). The top (open end) of the tower shall be provided with a rubber cushion to support an inverted l-gallon bottle (not to be supplied with water demineralize), thereby increasing the capacity to 2 gallons (7.75 liters). The tower shall have provisions to accommodate the outlet tubing, and electrodes for the quality check meter electrical circuitry.
Base. The base shall have nominal dimensions of 4-1/4 inches (10.8 cm) high by 6 inches (15.24 cm.) wide by 8-1/4 inches (20.95 cm.) wide. The top of the base shall have a cutout with a rubber cushion to support the tower. The base shall be capable of being disassembled to allow access to and removal of the tower, quality check meter, and electrical circuitry.
Quality check meter. The quality check meter shall be calibrated in both arts per million (ppm) and the equivalent resistance in megohms. The meter scale shall include a range of 0 to 50 ppm. (infinity to 0.01 megohms). A push-button type switch, that is accessible on the base housing, shall be provided to activate the meter when readings are required.
